Stockport residents are among the most house-proud in the UK.

That's according to a new study which has measured the amount of effort and money spent on home renovations in towns and cities across the country.

On this basis, Stockport was suggested to be the 11th most house-proud town in the UK.

The research - compiled by Locksmith Croydon - was based on metrics such as the average amount spent on home renovations per town, and the number of home-improvement related searches.

In Stockport, researchers found that per 100,00 residents, there were 676 home improvement-related searches per month, as well as an average home renovation spend of £3,238 per year.

With this in mind, Stockport was given a final 'house proud score' of 7.88.

It's the fifth highest in Greater Manchester, behind Manchester itself (8.49), Bolton (8.34), Rochdale (8.19), and Oldham (8.03).

Taking the top spot for the country was Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with 938 searches per month and an average spend of £4,859.

The methodology involved analysing Google Adwords for search terms like 'home decor ideas', 'home upgrades', and 'spring cleaning tips', alongside searches for specific rooms such as the bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, loft, and garden.

Additionally, the annual home renovation spending data was sourced from Checkatrade's 2023 Home Pride Index report.

The study comes not long after The Heatons was named as one of The Times' best places to live for 2025. Last year, Stockport town centre also featured in the same list.

Speaking of the housing market in Stockport more generally, local estate and lettings agent Julian Wadden said: "Those in the market for a Stockport property in 2025 will find they have a little more breathing space compared to the frenzied activity of 2021/22.

"While desirable properties still attract competition, there are opportunities to negotiate on price or secure favourable terms, particularly on homes that have been on the market for a while."

In any case: for Stopfordians, it seems that their home certainly is their castle!
