Special guests unveil two new plaques to celebrate Stockport's musical history
Two new plaques were unveiled yesterday in Stockport town centre, celebrating the town's musical history.
They were unveiled during a walking tour of Stockport's musical history on SUnday 9 June. Present were special guests Peter Hook, Clint Boon, Peter Tattersall, Dr Peter Wadsworth, and former mayor of Stockport Walter Brett.
The first mural is sited at 16-18 Great Underbank in Stockport town centre, and commemorates Inter-City Studios, which was based on the first floor of that building (the ground floor was formerly the Nield and Hardy music store).
Inter-City studios was founded by Peter Tattersall in 1967, and was the precursor to Strawberry Studios, which was established in 1968.
The second plaque was unveiled a few meteres down the street at the Syndikat building, the site of the remarkable Unknown Pleasures mural.
This plaque was unveiled by Peter Hook himself, bassist and co-founder of Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures being the band's debut album.
The album was recorded in three weekends in 1979 at Strawberry Studios. The plaque commemorates all those involved in the recording and production process, and the impact on Stockport and indeed the world.
