The new Stockport fire station on King Street West has opened today (11 September).

It will serve the surrounding communities in Stockport and Edgeley, Manchester Airport, and the motorway.

The new station, based on the same site as the previous King Street West spot, was rebuilt as part of a £51m investment to open three new sites around Greater Manchester.

It has also been given a new name: 'Stockport Central Community Fire Station'.

Demolition at the former Stockport fire station started in August 2025. Since then firefighters had been working from neighbouring Whitehill Community Fire Station.

But now, with crews and engines in situ, the new King Street West station is ready for action.

Stockport MP Navendu Mishra said: "I'm just delighted that firefighters will have a modern facility here on King Street West.

"And we've got the Whitehill Fire Station in Reddish - that's in the pipeline, too, for redevelopment.

Cllr Matt Wynne, from the Edgeley Community Association, said: "It's an incredibly well built, modern public building that reflects the need of personnel stationed there who are ready to continue to service and protect the people of Central Stockport and beyond."
