Stockport commemorates 80 years since D-Day
Commemoration events took place across Stockport borough today to mark 80 years since the allied landings on D-Day.
In the town centre, a ceremony took place led by Sam Corley, Bishop of Stockport. Other speakers included Paul Brearley, deputy lieutenant of Greater Manchester, and Stockport Mayor Suzanne Wyatt.
The three speakers reflected on the sacrifice of veterans, and their role in bringing tyranny to an end.

100-year-old Stockport resident shares life advice
Elsie Shackcloth, a Cheadle resident, celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday 30 May 2024.
Her secrets to living a long life are "eating well, living well, and laughing".
Originally from North Manchester, Elsie was born in St Mary's Hospital on Oxford Road in 1924.
She is believed to be the oldest woman in Stockport - although not the oldest woman from Stockport! That accolade belongs to 104-year-old twin sisters Elma Harris and Thelma Barratt.

Stockport railway station to get 42 new pieces of artwork
Stockport railway station could be set for a dramatic makeover in the near future, as plans are submitted for 42 new pieces of artwork to be installed along the Station Road approach to the building.
The artworks would be massively wide-ranging in terms of style, size, theme, and location.
Some are works of photography - others are beautiful paintings of local landmarks, with abstract, impressionist, and classical styles on show, to name a few.
