A rugby club wants to sell off some of its land to fund a clubhouse revamp and an artificial pitch – with nearly 100 homes and a care facility also in the pipeline.

Stockport RUFC, based in Hazel Grove, says its home is in need of an upgrade.

Bosses want to sell off one pitch, paving the way for the development of 90 homes and a care facility. The land earmarked for sale is only used on Sundays as an overspill pitch.

All the club's pitches have had drainage issues. An artificial pitch could help reduce the use of grass pitches and would be more reliable, the club says.

A clubhouse upgrade would allow meals to be prepared inside, rather than a tent outside as is currently the case.

A first-aid and physio room are also included in the plans for the Jacksons Lane site. A 10 year vision also includes changing room improvements.

Of the new homes on the sold-off site, 45 would be 'affordable'. A decision on the application is yet to be made by the council.
