Election day has passed, and with it a few high-profile councillors.

The results for the 63 seats in contention this year were as follows:

LIB DEM - 30

LABOUR - 24

GREEN - 3

EDGELEY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION - 3

INDEPENDENT - 3

The Lib Dems remain the largest party, with their most notable gains being made in Bramhall South & Woodford, where two incumbent Conservative heavyweights were replaced after a close round of voting and a remarkably high turnout at 46.2%.

Speaking more generally of their regional victories, a statement from North West Lib Dems on Twitter said: "This has been an historic victory for the Liberal Democrats with our best result in decades.

"Voters have sent a political shockwave to dozens of Conservative MPs right across the blue wall."

However, an important win for Labour in Offerton for councillors Will Sharp and Helen Hibbert meant the Lib Dems missed out on the two councillors required for a majority.

Stockport Nub News spoke to Cllr Will Sharp after the election, who told us "Labour can make a difference".

Similarly buoyant after an impressive win in Bredbury and Woodley, Cllr Joe Barratt for Labour told us that there was no reason why this ward should not be a Labour area; hitherto, he said, the narrative had been that voting tactically was the only way to drive change, but this win has proved that Labour does have a place in the ward.

The councillor also stressed the importance of encouraging younger people that they can make a positive contribution for the area.

It was a bad day for the Conservatives who lost all of their four remaining seats on the council. We were unable to find a councillor to speak to us, and the local Conservative association Twitter pages have hitherto not provided a comment.

It was a good day, however, for local and independent parties. The Edgeley Community Association (ECA) took all three seats in Edgeley, with the lowest-scoring winner almost 300 votes clear of the nearest Labour competitor.

ECA councillor Matt Wynne said he and his fellow ECA councillors were "elated" with the result, and that "turn out up 7% is a win for local democracy".

He also said: "We have galvanised people who have never voted or not voted for a long time to come out & vote for a positive message of hard work, openness & community. This Ward was 72% Labour vote May 2022."

Meanwhile, the Independent Ratepayers' also kept all three of their seats in Heald Green. A statement on their website says: "Another really strong result for Heald Green!

"94 years and still going strong! Councillor Anna Charles-Jones, Councillor Carole McCann, Councillor Catherine Stuart all re-elected. Thank you for all your support."

The Green Party gained one more seat in Reddish South, meaning they now control the ward with all three seats.

Cllr Liz Crix said on Twitter: "Delighted to be re-elected onto Stockport Council again, along with existing Green councillor Gary Lawson and James Frizzell, who was elected for the first time. Now three Greens in Reddish South."
