A wave of changes are coming to Stockport's roads to improve safety and reduce traffic jams in the borough. It includes rolling out lower speed limits in residential areas, a new yellow box junction, and new crossings on busy roads.

The plans are being discussed by councillors across Stockport's various area committee meetings this week.

Councillor Grace Baynham, Stockport council's lead on road and transport matters, said the changes are aimed at making it easier to get around and stopping deaths on the roads.

She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "Road safety remains one of our top priorities. We want everyone who lives, works and travels in Stockport to feel confident that their streets are safe, healthy and reliable.

"All of our highways work is guided by our vision zero ambition, which is a long‑term commitment to eliminate deaths and life‑changing injuries on our roads.

"All proposed improvements, including the schemes in Cheadle and Marple, form part of our wider programme funded through the Greater Manchester City Region Transport Settlement (CRSTS).

"Together, these measures will make it easier and safer for people to get around, help reduce congestion, and support more sustainable travel choices across our borough."

One of the big changes on the way is the roll out of 20mph speed limits in certain areas.

This is the case in Marple Bridge, where a total of 13 streets covering the Cote Green Estate could be covered by the change.

There are also plans for a new Puffin crossing on Brabyns Brow outside Marple railway station after concerns from residents about the 'dangerous' road.

A council report summarising one resident's concerns stated: 'Conditions are so difficult that elderly people are not able to cross at all.'

On Compstall Road in Marple Bridge, a new Zebra crossing is planned along with double yellow lines along part of the street.

In Reddish, a yellow box is being planned on Gorton Road at the junction with Mill Lane due to problems with traffic 'obstructing the exit lanes' at the site.

Councillors approved to cover the cost of a feasibility study into how useful a yellow box could be at the junction.

A new 20mph speed limit zone is also being planned in Cheadle Heath on the Parkway Estate covering a total of 16 streets.

New bollards are set to be installed along part of Councillor Lane opposite Meadowbank Primary School after issues with motorists 'driving over the grass verge and parking on and around the crossing point.'

The bollards will be funded from the council's ward budget for the area at a cost of £2,600.
