A major junction in Stockport will get new road changes when it reopens in March.

Works at the Greek Street bridge and roundabout have been ongoing since last year and are set to finish at the end of this month, with an opening date of March 27.

Network rail engineers have replaced the ageing bridge structure which runs over the West Coast Main Line with a new one in a £20m project.

Stockport council has now confirmed the roundabout will have changes when the busy junction reopens.

The site serves as a key interchange between Stockport town centre, Edgeley, and Shaw Heath.

When the roundabout reopens, it will have new changes to make it 'safer and easier for people to move around', the council said.

It includes new zebra crossings on the eastern and northern sides of the junction, improvements to the existing zebra crossing on the southern side of the roundabout, and improvements to the pedestrian crossing on the western side.

The council said it has also been 'investing heavily' in sustainable travel, including the opening of a new pedestrian and cycle link connecting the newly renamed 'Driver John Axon' railway bridge with Thomson Street, the completion of a new cycle route on Moseley Street in Edgeley, and the soon to be completed new Toucan crossing, located on Greek Street.

Changes at Greek Street bridge have been designed to 'future-proof' the site for potential tram-train options, with the aim of supporting the plans to bring Metrolink into Stockport town centre.

Major cycling upgrades are also planned around Stockport as part of a vision to boost active travel in the borough.

This includes walking and cycling connections between Stockport railway station, transport interchange, and the wider town centre area, with onward links to Edgeley, Cale Green and Davenport, Adswood, and Heaton Mersey.

Stockport council leader Mark Roberts said: "The reopening of Greek Street Bridge marks a really important moment for Stockport.

"Not only will it restore a key route for residents, commuters and businesses, but it also strengthens the foundations we're putting in place for the borough's future.

"Reopening the road is another step forward in our wider transport vision for Stockport. It supports our long term‑ ambitions for Metrolink and the improved connectivity it will bring.

"We're committed to building a transport network that works for everyone, and this milestone brings us closer to achieving that."

Cllr Grace Baynham, the council's lead on highways and transport matters, said: "We have used the opportunity presented by the closure to renew and improve the infrastructure on and around the bridge, as well as working with Network Rail to future proof the structure for potential tram train options in the years ahead.

"This has been a major project, and I want to sincerely thank residents and local businesses for their patience and understanding while the essential work has taken place."

When the works started at Greek Street bridge in March 2025, there were fears that it could lead to chaos on Stockport's roads.

But local councillors in Edgeley said the project has been less disruptive than first expected, despite some issues to surrounding roads due to heavier traffic.

Cllr Asa Caton told the Local Democracy Reporting Service last week: "It's going to be a big change going back to how it was.

"I think businesses will be ready for it to reopen… but conversely to that we've had quite a few residents who have quite enjoyed it, saying to leave it shut.

"Chatham Street and York Street have been battered by traffic because the roundabout has been closed, and are now covered in pot holes and damaged kerbs."
