You may have lived in Stockport all your life without knowing that we are twinned with two charming European cities in the spirit of mutual friendship and cultural exchange.

Stockport, as a sign declares upon entering the borough, is twinned with Béziers in France and Heilbronn in Germany.

Like other towns and cities across Europe, Stockport was paired with these towns after the Second World War as part of a global effort of reconciliation, to help promote cultural and commercial ties.

In the modern era, much of the twinning is fostered and organised by the European Union.

Towns and cities are twinned because of similarities between them - geographical distance has little bearing on it.

For example, Coventry was twinned with Dresden and Stalingrad after the Second World War in recognition of the heavy bombing which all three of these places sustained.

So, what about Stockport's European friends?

Béziers

Béziers is a picturesque city in Southern France, nestled in a curve of the River Orb where it is bathed in balmy Mediterranean sun.

It's famous for fine wine, but has some other interesting quirks acquired through centuries of cultural crossover.

For one, there's an annual bull-fighting festival which wouldn't look out of place in Spain; it also has a Venice-esque affinity with canals; and it is distinctly Occitan - a culturally unique French group with its own language.

The buttery stone buildings and sun-bleached streets are suffused with history, too.

The city is one of the oldest in France - there have been people living on the site since at least 6,000 BCE, although the city proper began to take shape in the sixth-century BCE when a colony was founded there by migrating Greeks.

It was also occupied by forces from Islamic Iberia in the eighth century.

But possibly the most famous episode in the city's history was during the Albigensian Crusade in the 13th century, when Béziers became a stronghold for Catharism - the Christian denomination which was declared heretical by the medieval Catholic Church.

The town was sacked by Catholic Crusaders in 1209, who also burned the Cathedral of Saint Nazaire.

After this dark episode, the cathedral was subsequently rebuilt, and indeed is one of the city's most famous landmarks to this day.

Other notable spots include the medieval Pont Vieux, a stone bridge crossing the river Orb.

It became a cross-Channel pal of Stockport in 1972.

Heilbronn

The later of Stockport's European friends, Heilbronn was twinned with this corner of the Pennines in 1982.

Based in South-West Germany, it falls within Stuttgart's metropolitan area, rather like how Stockport falls within Greater Manchester's.

Heilbronn was a key trading city in the Middle Ages, but sadly very little of the old town remains after it was bombed during Second World War air raids.

Similarly to Béziers, Heilbronn is a major wine-producing area (although both are demonstrably unlike Stockport in this sense!).

Its most famous buildings are the Bollwerksturm - a 13th-century tower - and the Deutschhof - another medieval building which now serves as a gallery and museum.

Heilbronn is described by locals and Germans as a 'blue collar' town, a small place which is nonetheless just large enough to feel 'city-ish'.

It is also boasts some scenic nature spots, with the Neckar River providing both natural calm and idyllic waterside eateries.

And right up to the modern age, it's keeping on the cutting edge with the Experimenta Science Centre, Germany's largest science centre.

And so, if you ever find yourself in Béziers or Heilbronn, be sure to share that you are from their twin town! You could well be among friends.
