A SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) school in Stockport has picked up a prestigious national award.

Lisburne School won 'project of the year' at the Education Estates Awards, which aim to celebrate excellence and achievement in education nationally.

The award recognises projects that create welcoming classrooms and facilities for all students, including SEND pupils.

The 'state of the art' Lisburne School opened in Offerton in December 2024, costing £15.5m in all.

It provides 208 places for students aged 4-11 who have complex needs such as autism, learning difficulties and physical disabilities.

Designed by AtkinsRéalis, the school boasts a forest school, bespoke classrooms, a sensory garden, and much more.

Its aim is to support pupils in developing confidence, independence and social skills.

Speaking of winning the award, Lisburne headteacher Samantha Benson said: "On behalf of our whole school community, I would like to extend our thanks to the team at Atkins Realis for their dedication, care and determination to bring our vision to life, by creating the most amazing SEND provision for children across Stockport.

“Creating a space that is not only functional but also inspiring, inclusive and responsive to the needs of our pupils is no small feat.

"From the very beginning, the team listened with empathy, collaborated with integrity and worked tirelessly to capture our vision perfectly. We are extremely lucky to work in the most incredible building which allows us to support every child's ability to learn, grow and thrive.

"A huge congratulations to everybody involved in the whole journey."

Councillor Wendy Meikle, cabinet member for education at Stockport Council, added: "Winning this award is fantastic recognition for everyone who played a part in creating Lisburne School.

"It’s a true example of what can be achieved when we invest in inclusive, high-quality spaces that put children at the heart of design. This school is transforming lives and making a real difference to families and the wider community in Stockport."
