Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has announced the arrest of a 'prolific shoplifter' who was also wanted for failing to appear at court.

Town centre neighbourhood officers, with assistance from Brinnington neighbourhood officers, arrested the woman on Friday 23 June.

An employee at Smyths toy store detained the woman until police arrived.

GMP said: "After a thorough police investigation, the adult female has been charged with five thefts, one attempted theft and one common assault, and remanded into police custody.

"Stockport neighbourhood officers would like to give special thanks to Smyths toy store's loss prevention manager, who detained the female until police arrival.

"We are continually grateful to our partners and the public for alerting us to ongoing incidents. This helps us to tackle crime and makes the streets of Stockport safer."
