Stockport Plaza prepares to celebrate 25 years since being saved from closure

This October marks 25 years since Stockport Plaza was saved from being closed for good.
The iconic town centre building opened in 1932, and since then has seen a world war, 21 Prime Ministers, and thousands of shows.
However, the future of the Plaza has not always been plain sailing.
The Plaza was converted to a bingo hall in the 1960s, but by the late 1990s its future was uncertain.
The owners at the time, Rank Leisure, took the 'reluctant' decision to close the building in 1998.
However, following an enthusiastic campaign from the residents of Stockport, Rank Leisure sold the building to The Stockport Plaza Trust in March 2000.
After a six-month conversion, the Plaza was restored to its former glory and staged its first show in more than 33 years on 7 October.

Happy anniversary
To celebrate its 25 year anniversary, Stockport Plaza is hosting a special concert.
On 6 October, 25 years on from when the Plaza was saved, there will be a showcase of the mighty Compton Organ, which has provided the soundtrack to the Plaza's performances since it was installed in 1932.
Visitors will get a rare opportunity to hear more about this beautiful instrument and the talented players who sit behind it.
And needless to say, there will be music from across the decades, from silent film accompaniment through to the modern day.
