Simon Wilson will leave his role as Stockport County's CEO at the end of the season after significant progress on and off the field.

Wilson joined County in March 2020, when the club was in the National League.

"This has been the best thing I've ever done in my career. The last 18 months, stepping into both CEO and Director of Football roles, have been particularly intense but hugely rewarding as I've seen the club mature further and sit on the cusp of the Championship.

"When I joined, we set out on a clear long-term plan, and I'm proud that we've delivered on what we said we would and put the club in a strong position," he said.

Wilson worked with owner Mark Stott to create a long-term plan to reach the Championship. Since then, County has climbed the leagues and now plays at the top of League One.

Wilson's decision to step down followed a planned review with Stott, marking his six years at the club. They agreed that this is the right time to start the next phase focused on long-term sustainability.

As Wilson noted: "The most important thing is that the club is now in a position of real strength. The structures are in place, there's a clear way of working, and there are talented people throughout the organisation who will drive things forward."

The club highlights its strong foundations: a competitive squad, a growing academy, record attendance, rising revenues, more community work, and a stronger staff structure.

Owner Mark Stott said Wilson had been central to the club's progress, and while he requested him to stay in his role, he also respects Wilson's final decision.

"When we wrote the plan, we said we would see where we are after the sixth season. We both feel the major work has been done in setting the club up, and the next decade will be about capitalising on that," Scott added.

He said that although he asked Wilson to stay, he respects his decision and is glad Wilson will still be involved in a new role.

"He's played a huge role in getting the club to where it is today, and I'm pleased he will continue to support me through Stott Capital and by mentoring key people within my investments," Stott said.

Wilson described his time at County as the highlight of his career, while thanking everyone who has supported him in his journey.

" It's been a truly special ride. To all the players, staff and supporters – from me and my family – thank you for the last six years, you have been a huge part of our lives and we will never forget how you have made us feel," Wilson concluded.
