Stockport Council using 'cutting-edge' drones to help monitor flood risk

Stockport Council has been using 'cutting-edge' drone technology to help protect the environment.
Council teams have been using air- and water-borne drones to help monitor flood risks, erosion, and to help plan repairs.
Technology such as this can capture detailed pictures, revealing subtle changes in the landscape over time.
This can then be used to inform repairs and catch potential issues early, before they become a more serious problem.
Already it has supported work along the Goyt Valley footpath, keeping it safe for walkers.
It's been done in partnership with Wilde Consultants, and has supported local jobs and nurtured young engineers.
And in recognition of this 'pioneering' project, the Council has been shortlisted for the Best Use of Technology Award 2025, organised by the Local Council Roads Innovation Group.
Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Parks and Leisure Services, said: "We're thrilled to be shortlisted for these two awards.
"Investing in drone technology is proof of Stockport's forward thinking and commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our communities.
"From cutting-edge technology like drones to strong partnerships with companies like Wilde, not only is our work helping us today, but it's paving the way for a safer, greener future for Stockport."
