It's English Tourism Week until Sunday 23 March.

Organised by VisitEngland, the week aims to boost footfall at English tourist destinations, and support the many employees and businesses which are connected with them.

With this in mind, Stockport Council has produced a rundown of some of the best tourist destinations in the borough which might be worth a visit.

  • Stockport Hat Museum: You may not know that Stockport hosts the UK's only dedicated hatmaking museum. If that isn't reason enough to visit, you can also count on free entry, plus a huge range of displays showcasing everything from The Duke of Wellington's bicorn through to the statement hats of Manchester drag artists.
  • Stockport Market Place: Stockport's indoor market is home to art dealers, bookshops, eateries, and much more. It's reputation recently helped earn Stockport a spot as one of the UK's most quintessential market towns.
  • The Produce Hall: This food venue has a huge range of stalls, offering cuisine for everyone's tastes.
  • Stockport Air Raid Shelters: This historic labyrinth provides a fascinating glimpse into life during the Second World War.
  • Stockport Plaza: The perfect spot to catch a film or a live show.

Bramall Hall would normally feature on this list, but sadly the hall is closed until easter this year. You can, however, take a virtual tour here.

King Charles III - a patron of English Tourism Week - said: "I personally believe that we are incredibly lucky to be blessed with such a rich assortment of historic and cultural gems in this country, not to mention the jewel of our national parks and, above all, some of the wonders of our many hidden gardens which are once again ready to amaze and delight visitors."

Councillor Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: "We are thrilled to mark English Tourism Week and to highlight the incredible progress Stockport has made since being named the Greater Manchester Town of Culture.

"Our community's commitment to preserving our heritage and promoting cultural events has made Stockport a must-visit destination.

"English Tourism Week offers a perfect opportunity to explore Stockport's hidden gems, engage in local events, and immerse yourself in the town's unique charm. As we reflect on the past year's achievements, we invite everyone to experience all that Stockport has to offer."
