Stockport Council appoints new leader and deputy leader

Stockport Council has a new leader and deputy leader.
Lib Dem councillor Mark Roberts is the new leader of Stockport Council and the Stockport Liberal Democrat group.
He takes on the role from Cllr Mark Hunter, who held the position since 2022.
Lib Dem councillor Jilly Julian has been appointed as deputy leader of the council.
Stockport's Liberal Democrat group (the largest party in the council) elected them both after Cllr Mark Hunter announced in March that he would be stepping down from his role as leader.
They were appointed at a Stockport Council meeting today (Tuesday 20 May).

Speaking of his new role as leader, Cllr Roberts described it as 'a great honour'.
"I look forward to the coming year with a deep sense of pride and humility", he said.
"This is the most important role that I've ever played.
"I hope to bring a constructive and collaborative team-led approach to the challenges that this borough faces."
"No single group or party has a monopoly on good ideas. That's why I'm calling for constructive engagement from all parties.
"The people of Stockport expect us to listen, to debate, and above all - to act in their best interest."
Cllr Roberts said he would be using the Stockport Lib Dem manifesto as a 'guidebook', and said he'd like to see a "fairer, more prosperous, and sustainable Stockport".
He added: "The challenges are considerable - but so is our resolve, and we will rise to meet them."
Cllr Mark Hunter will remain a councillor for the Cheadle Hulme South ward.
The council's Labour opposition has also appointed new leadership: Cllr Christine Carrigan is the new leader of Stockport Labour Group, and Cllr Joe Barratt is deputy leader.
