Homeless tents have been put up in Stockport opposite the town hall.

Two blue tents have appeared on Edward Street outside the offices of Stockport Homes, a social housing landlord managing properties on behalf of the council.

They had people inside them who appeared to be living on the streets, and one of the tents had a sign written on cardboard saying 'we are homeless'.

A man inside one of the tents and said he's from Sudan. "I'm not okay, it's very hard for me," he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), adding that he is struggling to cope with living outdoors.

The tents were seen as councillors in Stockport gathered in the town hall for a meeting to confirm the council's new leadership team.

One councillor told the LDRS they were not sure how long the tents had been outside the town hall, but that they had first noticed them today (May 20).

A Stockport Homes spokesperson said its teams are aware of the situation and are trying to offer support.

"We know that seeing people sleeping in tents in the town centre is upsetting – and for those living in that situation, it's even more distressing," a spokesperson said. "It's something we take extremely seriously."

"Our teams are already engaging with those on Edward Street to offer support. That includes help and personalised advice to try and get people off the streets and into somewhere safe.

"No one should have to sleep rough in Stockport. There is help available, and we're here to make sure it reaches those who need it most.

"We'll keep working with partners to provide the right support – and to make sure the town centre stays safe, welcoming and accessible for everyone."
