Cllr Kerry Waters has been elected as Stockport borough's new mayor for the 2025/26 term.

Cllr Waters was elected unanimously at a meeting of Stockport Council this afternoon (Tuesday 20 May). Cllr Waters replaces Cllr Suzanne Wyatt, who has held the position since May 2024.

The mayor is the 'first citizen' in the borough. Their role includes chairing full council meetings, visiting events across the borough, and leading civic ceremonies.

The council has also elected Cllr Gary Lawson from the Reddish South ward as deputy mayor.

Cllr Waters is a councillor in the Brinnington & Stockport Central ward. She has also served as deputy mayor of Stockport for the past two years.

Cllr Christine Carrigan, leader of Stockport Labour Group, introduced the motion to elect Cllr Waters as mayor.

"In Kerry, I discovered someone loyal, passionate, hard-working, and most importantly - genuine", Cllr Carrigan said.

"Her determination and positive spirit remind us that obstacles are meant to be overcome."

"Kerry has a knack of getting the job done, and she does it in a way that keeps everybody smiling."

Speaking at her election, Cllr Waters said it was "exciting and scary all at the same time".

"I've lived in Stockport all my life", she said. "To see it growing as it is is just fantastic. It's an honour and a pleasure to be representing such a wonderful town."

"I hope I can make this town proud as mayor."

Cllr Suzanne Wyatt, said of the role: "I can't believe that a year has gone by since I stood where Kerry now stands.

"I'm still reeling from the honour of being chosen to be mayor. [...] I wouldn't have missed it for the world."

Cllr Wyatt also spoke about the volunteers she has met as mayor. "I continue to be convinced that without volunteers, this country would grind to a halt", she said.

"I have so many memories to cherish."

The new mayor's charities are the MS Society, Stockport Sea Cadets, and the New Horizons Canal Boat.

Speaking of his appointment as deputy mayor, Cllr Gary Lawson said: "When we get to the end of the year, I hope that we'll be able to say we've made a positive difference."
