Stockport commemorates VE Day with 'wonderful' ceremony

Veterans and members of the public gathered in Stockport last night (May 8) to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
A gathering of the armed forces community was held outside St George's Church at 6.30pm, the same time as church bells rang out across the country to mark the moment World War Two came to an end in Europe.
The poignant event saw standard bearers front and centre along a flag-lined street, with families and local residents turning out to pay their respects and remember loved ones.
"For me this day is always emotional," said Christopher Quigley, who was part of the former 1st Royal Tank Regiment.
The 40-year-old from Salford joined the army in 2003, following in the footsteps of his grandfather who fought in World War Two, and said he had always been interested in the military.
"I wanted to carry on that family tradition, and do my duty for my country," he added, explaining that he was later medically discharged after being injured during a training session.

The event was attended by a number of Stockport councillors who joined the VE Day celebrations in the borough.
"It was a wonderful event," said Cllr Dominic Hardwick. "It's marking the 80th anniversary [of VE Day], that was a day of celebration, but there was a mix of emotion today.
"It was brilliant to see so many members of the public come along."
Stockport has celebrated VE Day this week with a number of special tributes and events.
The VE Day flag was flown outside the town hall for the week, primary schools planned mini street parties, and a VE Day tea dance was held.
Council leader Mark Hunter said VE Day was a chance to "reflect on the sacrifices made by those who secured our freedom while celebrating the resilience and hope of the communities who rebuilt their lives after the war."
He added: "VE-Day 80 marks an important occasion in our history. We are proud to support initiatives that not only honour our past but also celebrate those who have shaped our community since 1945.
"Let's take the time to remember all those people who sacrificed so much for our future."
