A graduate from Stockport College has led its arts students in pioneering a special temporary sculpture trail celebrating Stockport as well as the opening of the town's new Viaduct Park.

Recent college alum Susanna Vosper headed the project, which was dubbed the 'Stockport Mile Gifted Sculpture Trail,' in recognition of what the town has given the group.

Each sculpture explores the special connections or associations with Stockport through physical form, story-telling, ceramics, industrial materials, collage, mark making or textiles.

Susanna said: "I've loved seeing how we all have a different association with Stockport. Each sculpture has a story behind it and some are really moving."

She added: "Everyone's response has been so different and it's great hearing the voices of young adults at the start of their creative careers, but it's not just the current students who are grateful.

An organised walk will also be held at 11:30am this Sunday (24th) which will begin at the newly-opened Viaduct Park (Image - Alasdair Perry)

"I graduated in 2023, and, for me, Stockport gave me a chance as a mature student to follow my dream to do an art degree and become a practising artist so that was the focus of my piece.

"We really appreciate the Stockport Council's Town of Culture programme backing this project."

Sculptures on the trail include 'Sprout', who is meant to serve as a metaphor for personal growth. Other sculptures are titled, 'Grow a Pear,' '16:03,' and 'Escape to the Park,' which explores mental health and the importance of accessing Stockport's green spaces.

Councillor Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture & Sport at Stockport Council, said: "It's wonderful to see how Stockport has inspired such fantastic sculptures by students at Stockport College, especially as our tenure as Greater Manchester Town of Culture draws to a close."

Visitors will be able to walk the one-mile route, which will feature the assorted sculptures displayed in various shop windows and venues, any time from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 March.
