Stockport Council has 'welcomed' a £6,820,000 grant to help tackle potholes and improve roads around the borough.

The funding comes from a £60m pot which has been made available by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority; it is being distributed in batches to councils across the city region.

With its share, Stockport Council has said it will support essential maintenance and improvements to roads and infrastructure across the borough.

This will include highway maintenance, carriageway patching, and work on bridges and structures.

However, while the council has said the funding will improve the short-term resilience of the road network, it has said that longer-term investment is needed to properly maintain the borough's large and well-used road network.

Cllr Grace Baynham, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We welcome this funding, which we've been pushing for as part of our efforts to improve Stockport's roads and highways. It will help us carry out important maintenance and repair work.

"However, maintaining a large and heavily used network requires sustained, long-term investment and greater funding over a number of years, and we will continue to make the case for Stockport to receive the support it needs.

"We will use this funding carefully to support priority work, including planned highway maintenance, carriageway patching, bridges and structures."
