Stockport has been recognised as having a 'vibrant' and 'excellent' night-time economy.

Specifically, the town has been allowed to keep its 'Purple Flag' status - an award granted by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM).

A Purple Flag accreditation means the town has met certain 'standards of excellence' in managing the night-time economy - that is to say, between 5pm and 5am.

Some of the ATCM's criteria for judging the night-time economy include:

  • Safety - is the area safe, both during the night out and coming home?
  • Appeal - is there a vibrant range of options for visitors?
  • Place - is there 'character and identity' in the area?

To receive a Purple Flag, applicants must apply to ATCM and maintain the standards it sets. This is not Stockport's first time to receive the award - more accurately, this recent Purple Flag 'award' is in fact a reconfirmation of the status already held by the town.

Universities, civic societies, and local authorities such as Stockport can all apply. There are around 100 other Purple Flag destinations, most of them in the UK.

Others include Bristol, Winchester, and Bournemouth.

Stockport Council argued that a welter of new restaurants, the new Interchange, and evening events have all helped the town retain its Purple Flag status.

Leader of Stockport Council, Councillor Mark Hunter, said: “Retaining the Purple Flag accreditation is fantastic news for Stockport and reinforces the success of our continued investment and partnership work.

"It demonstrates the confidence businesses and visitors have in our thriving town centre, with more people choosing to spend their evenings here.

“With our ambitious regeneration plans, including thousands of new homes and the new transport interchange, Stockport is set to become an even more attractive destination for those looking for a safe and enjoyable night out.”

Chief Inspector John Picton from Greater Manchester Police said: “This accreditation is a testament to the strong partnership between GMP, Stockport Council and local businesses.

"Ensuring that Stockport remains a safe and welcoming place for residents and visitors is a priority, and we are pleased to see our joint efforts recognised. We will continue working closely with all partners to maintain the high standards that have led to this achievement.”
