The new 'Emergency and Urgent Care Campus' at Stepping Hill Hospital has reached a key milestone, as structural steel was signed by representatives from Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust's chair Professor Tony Warne and chief executive Karen James OBE took part in a ceremony with contractors building company Tilbury Douglas.
Together with project and building team members, they signed a structural steel beam in the building to symbolise the teamwork which has driven the development and the 'shared ambition for the best possible patient care' in the new campus.
According to the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust: "The campus will help to enhance emergency and urgent care for the local population of Stockport as well as residents in High Peak and Cheshire East, transforming their local hospitals' A&E into a more modern and efficient building, where patients, their families and carers can expect to receive high quality care.
"The design of the campus is centred on patient needs, with the best possible state-of-the-art facilities being made available for staff.
"The campus will include new assessment, treatment and consultation areas for several key emergency and urgent care services including the children's emergency department, mental health, and medical same day emergency care."
The trust adds that the campus is 'progressing well', with the main building structure complete, and with cladding, internal mechanical work and electrical fitting currently underway.
Building work is expected to be completed by the end of March 2024.
The aforementioned Professor Tony Warne, said: "It was a great experience to take part in the steel signing which is another great landmark on the road to constructing our new emergency and urgent care campus.
"With the main building structure now in place, it really helps us to look forward to the time next year when it will be open and helping us to provide enhanced care for our patients and population."
Tilbury Douglas project manager Darren Westcott said "We are delighted to bring the team together and mark the construction progress with the signing of a structural steel beam.
"Although the signatures will eventually be hidden, they symbolise the teamwork which has driven the development and the shared ambition for the best possible patient care."
