Shuttle buses could ferry customers to Stockport Pyramid as part of a bid to turn the building into a huge curry house.

Bosses behind the plans at the Royal Nawaab say putting on buses from Stockport train station would help more people get to the landmark building without needing to drive.

An application to convert the Pyramid could see it turned into a curry house with a buffet restaurant with banquet halls spread across three floors of the building, with a 'lavish' space for events.

Around 1,500 diners would fit into the building, as well as 150 staff under the current proposals. More than 400 car parking spots are included in the design, but a councillor shared concerns this week that the Pyramid becoming a food venue could lead to more traffic on the roads.

Cllr Dean Fitzpatrick questioned whether the proposal could "considerably increase traffic" at certain times on Didsbury Road and George's Road, and asked for more information about transport arrangements at a town hall meeting on October 28.

A council officer pointed out that National Highways initially objected to the plans, but that Royal Nawaab managed to ease these fears with updated travel proposals.

While the proposals "acknowledge that a high proportion of people visiting will come by car" rather than other modes of transport, the council added that officers were happy there would be no "significant impact" on the road network.

If the scheme is approved, shuttle buses could pick up passengers at Stockport train station and take them to the venue 'at key times' before and after events such as large weddings.

This would include timetables showing the shuttle bus departure times from Stockport station and the venue, as well as signs and maps showing pick up and drop off locations.

Stockport Pyramid was previously used as offices for the Co-operative bank until the company left the site in 2018, and it has been left empty ever since.

Plans to bring it back into use as a curry house are due to be approved by Stockport council at a planning meeting on November 14 at the town hall.

The scheme has been supported by council officers who are recommending it is approved, as well as having the backing of Stockport's MP.
