People in Stockport are demanding something be done about an 'eyesore' former petrol station which they say has become a dumping ground for rubbish.

The land is on the corner of Stockport Road and Kent Road, based next to Cheadle Heath Park.

Residents living nearby said the land has been empty for years and is causing issues in the area.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) found one side of wooden hoarding around the site had blown down, leaving the land accessible from the street.

Stockport council said its enforcement team has visited the site following complaints and is in talks with the landowner.

Julie Mills, 67, who lives nearby, said: "The whole road is appalled by it, it's an eyesore and I have expressed this to the council.

"When it's very windy these boards blow down, they are normally replaced quite quickly but they've been down for months now, it's a real shame.

"I would think it would depreciate the houses in this area too."

Rhys, 43, said: "People dump loads of crap on it, the gates will swing open when it's really windy and someone will have to close it."

Charlie, 33, added: "I'd like for it to be used for something, there were flats planned there previously.

"My main concern is that this road gets really busy with cars from people living here. Depending on the parking situation [if flats are built], it could get worse."

The LDRS has made attempts to contact the landowner.

Edgeley councillor Matt Wynne said the state of the land is 'unacceptable' and urged action from the town hall.

He posted a video on social media updating residents on the situation.

"It's been problematic for about 15 years since it ceased to be a petrol station," he said in the video.

"We've been trying for years now to get the council to hold the landowners to account, to basically keep the land in a good state, we're not getting anywhere with it.

"We've spoken to the council again in the last couple of weeks, the planning enforcement department, to get the landowner to replace the hoardings to remove all the flytipping on the land, and to get the landowner in a position where they are paying out of their pocket to maintain the site which is an eyesore.

"Unfortunately they [the council] don't want to take action, they say that residents aren't properly overlooking the site, and it's not affecting the amenity of the area, we say this is absolute nonsense.

"This is again the council not using its enforcement powers when residents are rightfully raising concerns."

A planning application was granted by the council in 2018 to build 12 apartments each with two bedrooms, as well as car parking spaces.

But the plans by DOM Properties Limited appear to have stalled.
