Police recover 'potentially deadly' firearm in Brinnington during crime crackdown

Police have recovered a firearm in Brinnington which they say could have been 'potentially deadly'.
The gun was found by a police patrol in a stretch of forest off Northumberland Road, and is being forensically assessed to determine its viability.
The discovery was made during an intensified police operation in Brinnington which has spanned the last three weeks, aiming to address 'deep-rooted' criminality.
The operation has seen Greater Manchester Police's dedicated 'Vulcan' team deployed to the area, which has previous experience working in Derker, Piccadilly Gardens, and Cheetham Hill.
The Vulcan team is carrying out "a sustained campaign of activity", ranging from arrests and early-morning search warrants through to community engagement days.
The team aims to tackle criminality head-on, while 'laying foundations' to keep the crime rate lower in the future.
The Vulcan team has been on the ground since mid-February, with this weapon discovery taking place just days into the operation.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Julien said: "We have been working in Brinnington for just over three weeks, carrying out a number of proactive operations during that time.
"Brinnington is a community full of good, hard working people, and we are absolutely committed to doing everything we can to protect them and safeguard the area from criminality.
"Seizing this firearm is an excellent result for the team. While further assessments of the weapon are ongoing, removing it from the streets prevents it from being used for any criminal purpose.
"If you are in Brinnington and have any concerns, please do get in touch with us. We will continue to maintain a visible presence in the area, and any intelligence you provide will be carefully reviewed and acted upon."
