A police bomb squad was called to Sheffield Street in Lancashire Hill today (Tuesday 7 October) following the discovery of an unexploded grenade.

A 100-metre cordon is in place, with bomb disposal experts working to remove the grenade from the area.

Nearby houses and businesses have been evacuated.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has said the device is not believed to be suspicious.

A GMP spokesperson said: "Emergency services are currently responding to an ongoing incident on Sheffield Street, Heaton Norris.

"A suspected grenade has been found and a cordon is in place while enquiries are ongoing. The device is not believed to be suspicious. The Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) have been tasked to attend the scene and remove the device.

"Nearby houses and businesses have been evacuated as precaution. People are being asked to avoid Wharf Street Junction and Short Street Junction of Old Road."
