Plans have been submitted to repair and replace the roof at Bramall Hall.
The repairs would aim to improve water drainage from the roof, and therefore reduce the risk of water damage to the historic features of the building.
The work would be carried out with "greatest possible care to eliminate every possibility of damage" to the building.
Furthermore, the materials used would be as close as possible to those which are currently in place.
This includes the stone and lead in the roof, the brick in the chimney, and the cast iron downpipes - all of it will be as sympathetic with the character of the building as possible, with reclaimed materials being used where available.
Likewise, the contractors would aim to minimise the loss of existing timber elements in the building.
The hall would be kept weathertight throughout the course of repairs, and it would remain open to visitors.
Speaking earlier this year, a Stockport Council spokesperson said: "Without urgent repairs, the building and its collections are at risk from the elements, and climate change is making this an increasingly pressing concern."
Bramall Hall is a Grade I listed building. Its oldest sections date from the 14th century, but most of the extant structure visible today is from the 16th century onwards.
The site welcomes around 36,000 visitors each year, and boasts some features of remarkable historical interest - unique not just in the UK, but throughout the world.
