Stockport is the first place in Greater Manchester to introduce a new scheme which aims to help residents with learning disabilities.
The scheme involves 'peer support workers'. It works by recruiting people with learning disabilities (or people who have used learning disability services) to help others with similar disabilities.
It means the support worker will be able to offer advice based on their own similar experiences, and provide "emotional and practical support".
An NHS spokesperson said the support workers will help their peers set life goals, stay well, communicate more readily, and they will also organise groups and activities.
"The overall aim is to help service users be healthy, happy, and as independent as possible", the spokesperson said.
It is also hoped that the support workers themselves will learn a lot, in what promises to be not just a paid role, but also one which will deliver experience and qualifications.
Gareth, one of the new peer support workers, said: "Peer support is important because it's about using your experience to help others.
"It helps people move on from where they are. Peer support workers can help others to gain more information, confidence, and skills to live a good life."
The NHS is currently welcoming applications for three new peer support workers to work in the area.
The deadline is 25 March. Find more information HERE.
