A new map has shown the areas in Stockport and Greater Manchester which are best served by public transport.

The map, published by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), shows the areas which have a tram or bus connection every 12 minutes at most.

Accounting for most of Stockport borough's connections are the 192, 203 and 330 bus services.

Falling under this area are Hazel Grove, Stepping Hill, Heaviley, the town centre, Heaton Chapel, Reddish, Bredbury and Woodley.

However, some areas such as Marple, Bramhall, and parts of Edgeley do not feature on the map.

Around 43 percent of Greater Manchester residents live within 'walking or wheeling' distance of one of the 'high-frequency' routes shown on the map.

And out of the 13.8 million bus journeys made in February, 54 percent were on these high-frequency routes.

TfGM has emphasised that high-frequency bus services are 'vital' in boosting passenger numbers, reducing congestion, and bolstering economic growth.

The publication of the map comes as TfGM prepares a new 'tap and go' system across its buses and trams.

The new system will allow passengers to tap a bank card, mobile phone, or smart watch on a tram or bus and only be charged the lowest fare at the end of the day.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: "In London, passengers often simply turn up to a Tube station or bus stop knowing that they'll be on board within minutes.

"Such a frequent and flexible public transport system shouldn't be exclusive to the capital – and we promised Greater Manchester we'd deliver it with the Bee Network. [...]

"Our call to the people of Greater Manchester is now to get on board and back the Bee Network so we can continue to go from strength to strength."
