New apartments proposed in historic building above Underbanks shops

Plans have been submitted for two new flats in a historic Grade II listed building in Stockport Underbanks.

The new apartments would take over the first and second floors of an early 19th century building on Great Underbank, above Greenhouse Books and Valli audiology and optometry (both shops would remain open).

Each apartment would contain two bedrooms, converting what is currently being used as office space.

The spaces would be 'good quality', celebrating the 'historic character' of the building with a modern finish.

According to a description, the flats would "use clay plasters, timber and breathable finishes to preserve the fabric of the building".

Furthermore, as part of the proposals, the ground floor shops would be repainted in a 'traditional' colour, matching some of the other shopfronts in the Underbanks.

A decision on the plans is expected by 19 March 2026.
