The majority of students at a high school in Stockport have been told to stay at home for at least next week after an inspection found dangerous RAAC concrete in parts of the building.
Bramhall High has been closed since last Thursday after Stockport Council took the 'difficult decision' to close. The council said safety of staff and pupils was of 'paramount concern'.
In an update to parents and students, the council said a decision was made at the weekend to remain closed today (Monday, November 13). The Seal Road school will partially reopen on Tuesday, but children in years 7, 8 and 9 will be taught from their homes until at least next Monday.
The statement said: "This was a difficult decision to take, but the safety of staff and pupils is our paramount concern. Bramhall High School will reopen on Tuesday, November 11 to Year 11, Year 10 and vulnerable students.
"All other students will learn remotely for the remainder of the week."
The council said a further update will be issued on Friday about teaching arrangements and attendance for next week. The council said an inspection took place last Wednesday at the school. On Thursday, the council was informed that RAAC had been found in some parts of the building.
At least 14 schools in Greater Manchester have faced disruption due to the concrete crisis. Other buildings – including hospitals and shopping centres – have also been confirmed as having dangerous crumbling concrete. Bury indoor market hall remains closed with many traders displaced after a similar concrete issue was found in its roof in late October.
Stockport council said: "In line with updated guidance issued on August 31, 2023, by the UK Government on the treatment of Reinforced Aerated Autoclave Concrete (RAAC) in education settings, Stockport council has been carrying out further inspections on all schools across the borough.
"We are working closely with the school to make sure alternative arrangements are up and running as soon as possible. "We also continue to carry out inspections across the borough so we can be assured about the condition of the roof material and that RAAC is not present."
A statement on the school's website, said: "We would like to thank the school community for your patience and understanding regarding the school closure."
