The government has confirmed it will provide investment for Stepping Hill Hospital and others in a state of "disrepair."

It follows pressure from Stockport's Labour and Lib Dem MPs who wrote to new health secretary Wes Streeting urging him to take immediate action.

In recent months, Stepping Hill has faced collapsing ceilings and flooded corridors, with its Outpatients B department closing last November and eventually being demolished.

In January, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) reported how staff at Stepping Hill were working in the 'worst conditions you can imagine' due to a backlog of repairs.

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust at the time apologised to any patients whose care experience had been impacted by the closure of Outpatients B.

But the Department of Health and Social Care told the LDRS today that new investment is on the way.

A spokesperson said: "It is clear that many hospitals, like Stepping Hill Hospital, are in a state of disrepair meaning patients have not been able to access the care they so desperately need.

"The NHS is broken and this government is determined to fix it.

"We will provide the investment and reform needed to get patients the care they deserve."

On Monday, a joint letter was shared by Cheadle MP Tom Morrison and Hazel Grove MP Lisa Smart about the state of Stepping Hill.

It called on health secretary Wes Streeting to visit the hospital and bring it 'back up to the required standard as soon as possible.'

It stated: "You will no doubt be aware of the substantial estate issues facing Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.

"Last year the Outpatients B Department was condemned and has been demolished, whilst in March the hospital's intensive care unit was temporarily closed due to a serious leak coming through the ceiling.

"We have both been contacted over the last few months by many residents who are extremely concerned about what is happening with the hospital, with some people telling us that important surgeries have been delayed because of these estate issues.'

On July 10, Stockport MP Navendu Mishra wrote to Mr Streeting calling for 'urgent capital funding to repair the ageing estate at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.'

The letter added: 'Stepping Hill's primary outpatient building has recently been demolished.

'The hospital's critical care unit and radiology building have also been declared unfit for use for much of this year as persistent leaks have threatened equipment and endangered patients and staff.'

After securing an election victory on July 4, Ms Smart told the LDRS that the plan for Stepping Hill should include an "additional hospital facility in the town centre" to serve residents.

In the run up to the general election, Lib Dem leader Ed Davey said he was "staggered" there was no plan to fund the repairs needed at the hospital.

Stepping Hill Hospital falls into the boundaries of the Cheadle constituency, but is used by people across the borough of Stockport and beyond.
