Plans have been lodged to build up to 500 homes on a new housing estate in Stockport.

It is part of a plan by Harrow Estates, part of the Redrow Group, to extend the Woodford Garden Village development, with a 'comprehensive masterplan' for the area.

Designs include a 'sustainable mix' of 500 homes, with a 'significant portion' of these set to be classed as affordable housing, family housing, senior living, and self-build plots.

The scheme involves a new mixed-use community hub adjacent to the Avro Heritage Museum, with events space and wider flexible community spaces.

The developer hopes the development could act as a 'focal point for the community' in future.

Woodford Garden Village secured planning consent in 2015, and since then, over 600 homes have been built on the site of the former Woodford Aerodrome.

The Aviator pub restaurant and primary school opened as part of this work.

Planning permission was granted for a new local centre in 2023, and planning conditions are now being discharged ahead of works commencing.

Harrow Estates is working towards submitting a planning application for the new development later this year.

Stockport is facing a housing shortage, with thousands of people across the borough on the council's register looking for a new home.

The town hall is working to build more homes, and 4,000 are expected to be built in the town centre by 2035 to mediate the issue.

But some councillors have said more should be done.

Harrow Estates hopes its new plans for Woodford Garden Village can help meet the borough's housing need.

Tim Noden, planning director at Harrow Estates, said: "This early-stage public consultation allows the local community to inform and influence these plans which include a mix of new homes, green and landscape-led spaces, and a new, enhanced community hub.

"We are establishing the design principles which will underpin further design work. Feedback received will help ensure these proposals complement the existing development at Woodford Garden Village".

The developer has launched a public consultation on the plans, which is due to open on July 17.

This is alongside the submission of initial planning documents to Stockport council.

A series of public drop-in exhibitions are taking place on Wednesday July 17, and Thursday July 18, at Woodford War Memorial Community Centre, Chester Road, Woodford, SK7 1PS, both between 4.30pm and 7pm.
