Stockport railway station will play host to some historic trains on Saturday 24 August.

Two special services will call at our town on the day to pick up passengers as part of some scenic rail tours.

The first will be the Retro High Speed Scot, a specially-chartered Intercity 125 train which will run from Crewe to Edinburgh, calling at Stockport around 7.50am.

It will also call at Reddish South at 8am, before thundering over the Pennines to Huddersfield and Wakefield. From there it will take the East Coast Mainline to Edinburgh Waverley, where it will stop around 12.45.

The train will leave Edinburgh again at 4.15pm, returning to Stockport around 9pm.

On the same day, the Cumbrian Mountain Express will call at Stockport, a mere five minutes after the Retro High Speed Scot, at 7.55am.

This train will be pulled by a steam locomotive from the Carnforth Steam Pool; starting at Crewe, the Express will call at Wilmslow and Stockport before speeding up to Preston, and from there, through beautiful Northern countryside onto Carlisle.

After a few hours' rest at Carlisle, the train will return via the Settle / Carlisle line, calling at Stockport again at around 8.40pm.

The tour organisers say of this route: "This is a wonderful opportunity for those from the Crewe and Manchester areas to travel by steam train over two of England's most scenic railway routes.

"We travel north to Carlisle by the West Coast Main Line over Shap and return via the famous Settle & Carlisle Railway Line. Both routes pass through spectacular mountain scenery. A magnificent steam locomotive will haul these trains, which recall the glorious days of steam travel."
