Eighteen previously free car parks across Stockport will introduce charges from 8 January.

Costs are expected to start at 50p for an hour rising to £2.40 for ten hours.

The car parks that will become charged from Thursday 8 January are as follows:

  • Andrew Street, Compstall
  • Brabyns Brow, Marple Bridge
  • Brabyns Park, Marple Bridge
  • Bramley Close, Bramhall
  • Brookside Lane, High Lane
  • Buxton Road (Library), High Lane
  • Buxton Road (Medical Centre), High Lane
  • Church Road, Gatley
  • Church Road/Woods Lane, Cheadle Hulme
  • Derby Range, Heaton Moor
  • Didsbury Road, Heaton Mersey
  • Finney Lane, Heald Green
  • Guywood Lane (Romiley Train Station), Romiley
  • Hallam Street, Heaviley
  • Hibbert/Church Lane, Marple
  • Middlers, Marple Bridge
  • Redhouse Lane, Bredbury
  • Windlehurst Road, High Lane

What's more, a further six will become charged from Tuesday 10 February 2026.

  • Arnold Street/Hardcastle Road, Edgeley
  • Ashbrook Lane, Reddish
  • Green Street, Shaw Heath
  • Margaret Street, Reddish
  • Rupert Street, Reddish
  • Torkington Park, Hazel Grove

The charges were agreed as part of Stockport Council's 2024 budget, but some councillors have since expressed concern about how the plans could mean more people park for free elsewhere at large supermarkets, at the cost of shops on local high streets.

However, Cllr Grace Baynham, cabinet member for highways and transport in Stockport, said at the time that some businesses 'might well benefit from the increased turnover in parking' as a result of the charges.

Some resident permits will be available for those who live near any of the aforementioned car parks and who can't easily access on-street parking, at a cost of £47.50 per year (£23.75 for Leisure Key holders).

This is just going to hurt small businesses around Reddish by deterring locals and people travelling through Reddish from visiting local shops.
