Dozens of illegal e-scooters seized in police crackdown

Police have seized 38 illegal e-scooters as part of a crackdown across Greater Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) explained that private e-scooters are illegal to use on roads and pavements, according to a 'widely misunderstood' UK law.
In a deployment across the city-region on Saturday 6 June, officers aimed to tackle unsafe and anti-social use of these scooters.
They also said the operation aimed to educate people about how and where the scooters can be used.
Classed as a motor vehicle, e-scooters require insurance, tax, and a valid licence when used on the road – requirements that privately owned scooters do not meet.
Only public, rental e-scooters can legally be used on UK roads; there is currently only one such approved scooter rental scheme operating in Greater Manchester.
Inspector Shah, from GMP's Roads Policing Unit, said: "Illegal e-scooter use poses a real risk to both riders and the public.
"Many of those we encounter are uninsured and unaware they are breaking the law.
"These operations are about reducing harm and keeping our communities safe and educating members of the public.
"We are urging the public to only use authorised rental schemes from the council and to avoid riding privately owned e-scooters on public roads or pavements."
