A highly congested stretch of road in Stockport will see a huge £34m investment from the government.

Improvements to the A34, also known as Kingsway, would see reduced traffic and better connectivity for motorists between Cheadle and Handforth. Walking and cycling routes will also benefit from this scheme along the road, providing new opportunities for active and sustainable travel.

Roads Minister Guy Opperman visited Stockport on November 30 as he confirmed works will begin early next year with an estimated end date of 2027.

A decision on the future of a historic golf club in Stockport was delayed last night (Thursday, December 14) after a disagreement over whether it is surplus to requirements.

Developer Hollins Strategic Land has submitted a planning application to build 278 houses on Gatley Golf Club, which it claims is "not an economically viable operation".

Sport England and England Gold have challenged the claim, stating that there is not "any clear evidence that the golf course is surplus to requirements to meet current and future demand".

Stockport Viaduct could become 'safety risk' without vital repairs

It's been an iconic landmark for more than 180 years, but Stockport Viaduct could become a hazard if vital repairs aren't completed soon.

Network Rail has shared plans for work that needs to be completed at the famous structure as part of a new planning application. It includes repairs to crumbling brickwork, known as spalling, which could "present a safety risk to people and property below" due to the height of the 19th century railway line which stands 33 metres tall.

The plans submitted to Stockport council state that the damage at the site "may affect its load bearing capacity" if not treated, due to "multiple defects" across the structure.
