An operation to tackle neighbourhood crime by Greater Manchester Police (GMP), Stockport Council and community partners was successfully put into action last week.

Operation AVRO, which began in 2021, aims to tackle issues including burglaries, vehicle crime, anti-social behaviour, off-road bike offences, and environmental crime in Greater Manchester.

Stockport's new District Commander, Chief Superintendant Lewis Hughes and Councillor Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, joined the council's Thriving Neighbourhoods Environmental Regulation team to crack down on the compliance of commercial vehicles with environmental regulations on November 14.

The operation, which was based in Hazel Grove, resulted in the reporting of five drivers for traffic offences and the arrest of one for drug driving.

Councillor Baynham said: "These proactive operations not only enforce the rules but also provide advice and education, helping to prevent future violations."

Councillor Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport also said the control of off-road illegal bikes must be handled in Stockport.

She said: "Off-road bikes are a danger to our communities, causing nuisance and posing serious safety risks.  Recovering illegal bikes and removing drugs from our streets sends a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated."

Stockport's scheme is a part of GMP's wider Operation AVRO initiative which delivers extra resources and specialist officers to different areas of Greater Manchester each month to tackle issues of public concern.

The operation last Thursday saw the arrest of 52 people, 100 vehicle stops, 120 deployments to work including knife arches, school events and hotspot patrols and 7 warrants in Greater Manchester overall.
