Construction work has started on a new town centre development which will deliver 67 affordable homes, plus a care facility.

Dubbed 'St Thomas' Gardens', the new project is based on the St Thomas' Hospital site, and aims to integrate housing, health and community services.

The old hospital building itself will be repurposed to house the care facility, which will contain 82 beds. The facility aims to 'breathe new life' into the 19th century hospital - a Grade II listed site which has been derelict for 15 years.

Both the workhouse and infirmary buildings will be preserved.

As for the homes, there will be 13-new build townhouses, as well as 54 apartments. Developed by housing association Stockport Homes, they will offer a mix of shared ownership and social rent.

The overall aim is to offer a "dynamic living space for all ages". The care facility in particular aims to help older residents living with dementia keep up their independence.

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: "We're creating a space where people can live happy, healthy lives, connected with the people and places that matter to them.

"Stockport is the fastest-ageing borough in Greater Manchester, so building homes and neighbourhoods for all ages is a vital part of our One Stockport, One Future ambition and £1bn town centre transformation."

Cllr Keith Holloway, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, added: "St Thomas' Gardens is a vital step in ensuring our borough supports residents' health and wellbeing. We want our neighbourhoods to offer the best healthcare and social spaces, where people feel connected and supported to services where they need them."
