A new art exhibition has opened at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, staged by the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

The exhibition - named 'Artful Remembrance' - will run until 29 October.

It aims to explore how art can "preserve, commemorate and reconnect us with people, places, objects and moments that shape our lives".

The varied exhibition features painting, sculpture and other contemporary practices, to convey emotions that sometimes words alone cannot.

It was officially opened by Stockport MP Navendu Mishra on 12 September, who said it was a 'real pleasure'.

Manchester's Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1859, with the aim of improving public exposure to the arts, supporting artists, and advocating the importance of arts in society.

They've been staging exhibitions for well over 100 years, with exhibitions continuing uninterrupted through both World Wars - indeed, some of their members even served as official wartime artists.

Nor is this the first time that the academy has hosted an exhibition at the War Memorial gallery.

A spokesperson said: "Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery provides a particularly resonant setting for the exhibition.

"Built in memory of those lost in the First World War, the gallery is both a place of remembrance and a much-loved public gallery where art, history and community come together."

Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery is open from 1-5pm Thursday to Friday, 10am-5pm on Saturday, and 11am-4pm on Sunday.
