Upcoming Vertu Trophy Final dubbed 'El Hattico' in honour of sides' nicknames
By Alasdair Perry 9th Apr 2026
Stockport County and Luton Town take to the pitch at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (12 April) to decide who will take home the Vertu Trophy - but they will also be contesting another, no less important, title.
Which side can rightly call itself 'The Hatters'?. Both Luton and County share the nickname, so this game has come to be seen as an 'El Hattico' to decide who lays best claim to the title.
The name is an adaptation of 'El Clasico' - the name for one of the most famous fixtures in world football, between rival clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Speaking with BBC News, County fan and writer Des Hinks argued that Stockport's claim is stronger, being that our town has the world's only museum dedicated solely to hatting.
However, Luton fans maintain that their hatting-themed mascots and centuries-old straw-hatting industry gives them hatting pre-eminence.
With the fixture looming, it's anyone's guess as to who will take home both the trophy and the title.
Luton and Stockport drew 1-1 in their league match on 21 March, and betting markets suggest that odds are relatively level, with Stockport just edging Luton at a 6/4 win chance compared to Luton's 7/4.
The Vertu Trophy is a knockout cup tournament for leagues One and Two in the English Football League.
All 48 clubs in the two leagues take part, plus 16 Premier League and Championship academy sides.
The match kicks off at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 12 April at 3pm.
Around 10,000 County fans are making the trip down to the capital.
