Stockport’s record-equalling run comes to an end | Newport County 2-1 Stockport County
Well, it had to end at some point. County's remarkable 12-game winning run has come to an end following a 2-1 away defeat to Newport.
It is a shame that it ended the way it did; The Hatters struggled to make their mark throughout the game, with many fans criticising it as one of the worst performances this season.
The visitors seemed to be on the backfoot for most of the first half, with most of the pressure coming from Newport.
The pressure eventually gave just before half-time, when Newport's Bryn Morris fired home a strike from the edge of the box, assisted by a free kick.
County conceded another long-range strike from Shane McLoughlin in the 68th minute, which more or less buried the game.
Tanto was able to nick a consolation goal in added time, but it was unfortunately too little, too late for the Hatters.
Manager Dave Challinor was critical of the performance in his post-match interview. "We got what we deserved in the game - absolutely nothing", he said. "We weren't at it by a long stretch.
"We've not been at our best the past couple of weeks, but we found a way - we didn't find a way today.
"Credit to Newport; they deserved to win the game. What you've got to do as a minimum is compete. I don't think we competed well enough."
Still, there's no reason to lose optimism. County remain a comfortable five points clear at the top of League Two, facing Salford City at Edgeley Park tomorrow (28 November).
Stockport Council was among those congratulating County on their winning run.
Cllr Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport, said: "It really is a fantastic achievement by everyone involved at the club and has set the team on course for what we all hope will be a season of success.
"There is a real buzz about the club and the town at the moment and long may that continue."
In a recent article in 'The Athletic', the club's owner, Mark Stott, spoke about his hopes for the future and how the club is hoping to grow.
"We are going into the schools, trying to grow the club. I drive around the different areas of Stockport and the most exciting thing for me is that, if there are 15 kids playing football (in the street or a park), six of them have County kits on. Its unheard of."
