Work has started on a new mural celebrating the life and legacy of music legend Gary 'Mani' Mounfield.

The artwork is located on a wall at Lafadi's Pub on Oldham Road, Failsworth, an area where The Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist grew up.

The piece is being created by artist Pic.One.Art, who worked on artworks including the Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, and it will take around a week to complete.

He said: "I couldn't wait to get started on this mural. Mani meant so much to so many people, and it's an honour to be asked to create something that celebrates his life here in Failsworth.

"There's a real sense of love behind this project, and I'm excited to bring that to the wall for everyone to see."

Mani passed away unexpectedly in his sleep in November 2025 and the project was inspired by The Stone Roses bandmate Ian Brown's moving eulogy at Manchester Cathedral.

Ian said in his tribute: "I want to start a campaign for a Mani statue - 50 feet high - a solid gold statue."

Mani's brother, Greg Mounfield, also helped to secure the location and has supported the project from the outset.

The mural is funded through a community-led crowdfunder organised by Stockport non-profit GRIT Studios, after overpowering love for the musician's legacy.

John Macaulay, co-founder of GRIT Studios said: "Mani was one of the warmest, funniest and most generous people I've ever known.

"The work we did together over a decade ago genuinely changed my life, and without his support, GRIT Studios probably wouldn't exist."

All proceedings from the crowdfunder will go towards Maggie's, a cancer charity that supported Mani's wife Imelda, during her cancer treatment.

Dame Laura Lee, Chief Executive at Maggie's said how Mani spoke about how the kindness shown to him and Imelda during her treatment restored his "faith in human nature."

"Everyone at Maggie's was deeply saddened about Mani's passing last year.

"I am delighted that a mural will be created in Mani's honour in the community that meant so much to him.

"We are incredibly grateful that the money raised will support Maggie's. It will make a real difference for people impacted by cancer in Manchester."
