Work on the new Sainsbury's local on the site of the former Dog & Partridge pub continues, with plans now submitted for signage on the site.

Plans were approved for the new Sainsbury's at 84 Buxton Road, High Lane, in December 2023. The building was previously earmarked to become a new Co-op store, but Co-op ended up withdrawing from the scheme.

As well as the store itself, the site will also have an ATM and a car park with 28 spaces (three of which will be disabled spaces, and four others will have electric vehicle charging points).

The building is single-storey, and based to the rear of the site.

It is understood that the developer is looking to have the project finished and open before the end of 2024.

The Dog and Partridge pub had stood vacant and in poor condition for some time.

Whilst some residents voiced concern about losing the pub, and the potential traffic of a new convenience store, others have argued that the new shop would be an asset for High Lane.

As an early committee report on the original plans argued: "The benefits of the redevelopment of the site - which is currently vacant and in a poor condition - are, on balance, considered to outweigh the harm resulting from the loss of the undesignated heritage asset in this particular case."

Regarding traffic, the development received minor amendments following a period of consultation. These included a revised car park, additional landscaping on the front of the site, and a relocation of staff parking.

At current, developers are seeking permission for signage on the site, including a double-sided 'totem' sign, plus graphics for the windows.

The planning application argues: "The proposed signage will be less visible than the previous signage for the public house.

"The scale of the signs and the setback nature of the store into the site means they will only be seen within the context of the new convenience store.

"The scale of the signs is entirely appropriate for their surroundings as they fit into this urban setting."
