Why does Stockport smell of smoke?
By Alasdair Perry 13th Jul 2026
Large swathes of Greater Manchester including Stockport have been smelling strongly of smoke since early on Sunday morning (12 July).
It's the result of a large wildfire on Saddleworth Moor near Dovestone Reservoir, which fire crews have been trying to extinguish since 8.40pm on Saturday 11 July.
Smoke from the fire has been blown a 'significant distance' across the area due to strong winds over the last few days.
Residents in the vicinity of the blaze have been asked by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) to keep their doors and windows shut where possible.
The cause of the fire is being investigated, with a 20-year-old woman now having been arrested on suspicion of arson, as of Monday afternoon.
Detective Inspector Andrew Day of Oldham CID said: "We are aware of social media posts circulating regarding this incident and would like to stress that this is a live police investigation.
"We would encourage people stop speculating regarding this and if you do have information, please report it to ourselves."
Saddleworth Neighbourhood Sergeant Andy Holian added: "Officers would like to thank all emergency services who have dealt with and continue to deal with this incident.
"In particular, our colleagues at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
"Firefighters have been working tirelessly in extremely challenging conditions to contain the fire and prevent further spread, with strong winds adding to an already difficult situation.
"They are putting themselves at risk to protect our communities, the environment and local wildlife, and they deserve our utmost respect and support."
GMFRS has urged people not to use disposable barbecues, campfires, or fireworks near moorland.
In the current dry conditions, even a small spark can quickly develop into a significant fire.
