Retro train to pass through Stockport next month
By Alasdair Perry 12th Jul 2026
Local residents will be treated to a blast from the past next month, with a retro train due to call at Stockport railway station.
The Summer Riviera, an InterCity 125 train, will be visiting Stockport on Saturday 8 August around 7.50am (after having called at Reddish South around 7.45am).
It will pick up passengers at Stockport station on its way from Bury down to the South, and will call at Bristol, Exeter and the seaside town of Paignton.
Passengers can hop off at Bristol, or hang on and continue to either of the later stops.
It therefore promises the chance to see great cities or lovely seaside.
The InterCity 125 was first introduced to Britain's railways in 1976. It was named after its top operational speed of 125 miles per hour.
It is regarded as a classic locomotive, made unique by its distinct wedge-shaped nose, devised by industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange.
This trip incorporates the Lickey Incline, the steepest sustained main-line railway incline in Great Britain.
Standard class tickets for the full tour are available from £99 - however, you can hop off a bit earlier at Bristol for £79.
First class tickets are also available for £149.
There will also be a buffet stocking a range of hot and cold food.
