Uncertainty surrounds the future of a historic Stockport building. The grade-II listed Woodbank Hall, in Woodbank Park outside the town centre, is on Historic England's heritage at-risk register.
The building dates back hundreds of years to 1814, and last November Stockport council promised there would be 'concrete proposals' on the table in early 2025 over the long-term plans for the site .
One of the town's historic landmarks, Historic England judged the building to be in a 'very bad' condition, with 'immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric; no solution agreed.'
The council was initially criticised for delays in carrying out essential fixes, but it has spent more than £250,000 on security and repairs.
So what's happening with Woodbank Hall and what could the future hold?
Cllr Micheala Meikle, Stockport council's cabinet member for skills, economy and regeneration, said proposals for the building are still being worked up.
In a statement to the Local Democracy Reporting Service she said: "Our heritage buildings are a vital part of the town's identity, and we remain committed to preserving them as part of our wider regeneration plans.
"At Woodbank Hall, we've invested significantly in security and essential repairs to protect its future, with over £250,000 already spent.
"We are now developing a detailed proposal to secure funding for the Hall's long-term, sustainable use.
"Drawing on lessons from successful projects like Stockroom and similar schemes elsewhere, this plan will ensure the Hall becomes a vibrant asset to the community.
"We'll be sharing more updates with residents once the proposals are finalised."
A spokesperson for Historic England said: "Woodbank Hall is a valued local building, listed at Grade II*. Dating from 1814, it was designed by Thomas Harrison in the Greek Revival style, inspired by the buildings of ancient Greece.
"The Hall was built for Peter Marsland, a leading Stockport industrialist who made his wealth through the use of steam-powered looms. The site is currently on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register.
"We look forward to supporting the council with its future plans for the Hall."
