A vacant unit on Buxton Road could soon welcome two new businesses.

Plans have been submitted to convert 64-66 Buxton Road - formerly a William Hill betting shop - into two new commercial units.

The new occupants of the shops have yet to be confirmed, so the planning application has made provision for a wide range of options, including shops, cafes and offices.

The two new shops would be individual units based on the ground floor.

As well as the shops, the plans also include an eight-bed shared living area, with seven beds on the first floor, and one on the ground floor. There would also be a large communal kitchen and living space on the ground floor.

According to the planning application, this accommodation would be aimed at "private residents seeking an affordable but high-quality housing solution in the local area".

The building dates from the 19th century and sits in the St George's Conservation Area, which features a mix of commercial, industrial, religious and residential buildings.

However, the planning applicant argues that the building has already had a "significant degree of change which has had a negative impact". They point out that the new plans would "reverse some of these harmful interventions" and improve the character of the area.

Summing up the case for the plans, the applicant argued: "The scheme involves the refurbishment and reuse of a vacant building in an accessible and sustainable location.

"It will provide housing on previously developed land which will contribute to meeting housing need in the borough [...]

"It will also provide a boost to local shops and businesses through increased footfall and spending by future residents."
