There will be an increased police presence across Greater Manchester ahead of upcoming Jewish High Holy Days.

Greater Manchester Police will deploy additional patrols in Jewish communities across the city region to provide 'extra visibility and security' over the coming days.

It comes just before key events in the Jewish religious calendar including Rosh Hashanah (Jewish new year) on Friday 11 September and Yom Kippur from 20-21 September.

This period also sees the Ten Days of Repentance where Jews focus on prayer and introspection.

During that time, police officers will patrol Jewish communities, and will advise residents on how best to report any suspicious activity.

Plans for the deployment were formed following engagement with Jewish community leaders, who helped police best understand local concerns.

Chief Superintendent Dave Meeney, Gold commander for the High Holy Days, said: "We have significantly developed the way in which we police these events, and we have worked with local residents and businesses to make sure everyone can enjoy this time without fear or concern.

"Our officers will continue working with Jewish communities as we head into this important period for their faith, which we understand is a time which may bring heightened concern for the community.
